Ballybofey Big Birthday Bash

It’s 400 years since a charter first set up a market in the historic town of Ballybofey. To mark this amazing anniversary, Ballybofey is proudly celebrating with a range of cultural and heritage events, including: a Hiring Fair re-enactment; a mini-train ride courtesy of the Donegal Railway Heritage museum; vintage vehicle shows; an Irish coffee competition; street dance performances; a children's tractor run, and much much more.

Traditional Boats of Ireland – The Dónal Mac Polin Collection

This collection documents and highlights the splendour of the disappearing boat-building tradition around the Irish coast.  Based on extensive maritime history research this exhibition celebrates a variety of boats. These include currachs, drontheims, yawls, cots, hookers, punts, flats and skiffs.

Exhibition: The Emigration of Donegal Women, 1845 – 1950

Entitled 'A Long Farewell' this exhibition documents the Emigration of Donegal Women from 1845 to 1950. It is a joint Donegal County Museum/Archives exhibition. It runs from 27th September to 6th October. Please note that a later closing time of 6pm may apply on Saturdays and Sundays.

Go Visit Donegal – Donegal Bay Drive

This is the first of four Tourism Tours of the County. Experience the wild and rugged coastline of the Wild Atlantic Way in South Donegal. This trip starts in Donegal Town and takes in Hanna Hats and Magee 1866, Sliabh Liag, where visitors can enjoy panoramic views over Donegal Bay, and a boat trip along the coast. It includes traditional Irish music and locally produced artisan lunch at the Rusty Mackerel Pub Restaurant. Finally, get a real taste of the history, heritage and culture of Donegal at Glencolmcille Folk Village, where you can learn a few words of Irish too.

Free Visits To Donegal Heritage Sites

Various locations Take advantage of the fabulous Free Wednesdays' scheme run by Ireland's Office of Public Works (OPW). Under this scheme, Donegal Castle in Donegal Town, Doe Castle in Sheephaven Bay, and the Glebe Gallery in Church Hill offer free entry to the public on Wednesdays. Go Visit Donegal – Fanad Peninsula to Sheephaven Bay

The journey begins in Letterkenny with a morning walking tour of the Cathedral Quarter. The trip then continues north to the Fanad Peninsula via Rathmullan & the Flight of the Earls monument. Lunch will be served in Portsalon and then it's on to a tour of Fanad Lighthouse. The trip returns home via Ballyhiernan Bay onto the Rossguill Peninsula in Sheephaven Bay.

Donegal Fiddlers Glenties Gathering Concert

This concert is the highlight of the annual Donegal Fiddlers Gathering, which takes place at the Highlands Hotel, Glenties each October. This year’s event runs from Friday to Sunday, October 3rd to the 5th.  Established in 1983, the programme for the weekend includes classes, performances by special guest fiddle players, talks and occasional recitals.

Bridge of Tears Guided Walk

This 5km Walk leaves from Falcarragh and goes to over the Bridge of Tears - a local landmark which represents so much of the sorrow and loss of emigration.  In the 19th and early 20th century, local families would walk as far as this bridge with their loved ones who were emigrating.
