Free Visits To Donegal Heritage Sites

Various locations Take advantage of the fabulous Free Wednesdays' scheme run by Ireland's Office of Public Works (OPW). Under this scheme, Donegal Castle in Donegal Town, Doe Castle in Sheephaven Bay, and the Glebe Gallery in Church Hill offer free entry to the public on Wednesdays. Donegal Castle was built by the O'Donnell chieftain in the 15th century, beside the River Eske.  It is furnished throughout and includes Persian rugs and French tapestries. Ulster Scots Family History Festival

The Monreagh Ulster Scots Heritage and Education Centre are hosting this event for anyone who is interested in local or family history. Published authors specialising in history and immigration will share their knowledge. Guests will have an opportunity to discover the many connections that Donegal and the Foyle Valley has across the world and the many famous people who have an association with the area.  The day will include music, song, dance, poetry, and drama.

Born in Belfast in 1948, Fine Art photographer David Gepp now resides in Donegal. These eloquent photographic works depict the sea as it meets our coast and the interrelationship with the sky above us.

Donegal Voices Choral Concert

Go Visit Donegal – Fanad Peninsula to Sheephaven Bay

The journey begins in Letterkenny with a morning walking tour of the Cathedral Quarter. The trip then continues north to the Fanad Peninsula via Rathmullan & the Flight of the Earls monument. Lunch will be served in Portsalon and then it's on to a tour of Fanad Lighthouse. The trip returns home via Ballyhiernan Bay onto the Rossguill Peninsula in Sheephaven Bay.

#innovationisland: Oileán Árainn Mhór

This informal workshop will cover: Coderodojo Árainn Mhór - the kids coding club teaching digital skills and attracting tech mentors from the City of London; the eLearning secondary school project offering subjects like Physics in offshore virtual classrooms; MODAM - Ireland's first offshore shared digital workspace; and the demand for remote working and offices, which the island's innovation is creating.

The Henry Girls, Erdini in Concert


The Henry Girls - Malin sisters Karen, Lorna and Joleen - are one of the most popular groups to have emerged from Donegal in recent years, & have performed their wonderful blend of Irish Traditional, Oldtime music and Jazz, accompanied by stunning vocal harmonies, throughout Ireland, Europe and the US.  Erdini are a hugely popular ensemble from South Donegal, specializing in rousing Bluegrass and Oldtime tunes and songs. With brothers Conor and Rory Corbett on guitar and 5-string banjo, Jim Carbin on mandolin, Jaimie Carswell on bass and Scott McGettigan on drums.

Donegal Fiddlers Glenties Gathering Concert

This concert is the highlight of the annual Donegal Fiddlers Gathering, which takes place at the Highlands Hotel, Glenties each October. This year’s event runs from Friday to Sunday, October 3rd to the 5th.  Established in 1983, the programme for the weekend includes classes, performances by special guest fiddle players, talks and occasional recitals.

Bridge of Tears Guided Walk

This 5km Walk leaves from Falcarragh and goes to over the Bridge of Tears - a local landmark which represents so much of the sorrow and loss of emigration.  In the 19th and early 20th century, local families would walk as far as this bridge with their loved ones who were emigrating.

This Donegal Connect closing event offers a feast for all the senses with rich outdoor spectacle from LUXE - Donegal's internationally renowned landscape theatre company, and featuring the music of the famously gifted Inishowen sisters, The Henry Girls. As the sun sets over the mountains to the West, they will honour those who took passage into the unknown waters of the North Atlantic in their search for new worlds. Accompanied by The Henry Girls enchanting voices and music, LUXE will take the audience on a soul journey: an “Imramh” - a tale from Irish Mythology that mixes stories of sea travel with the journeying of the soul.
