Donegal Connect https://www.donegalconnect.com September 27th to October 6th 2019 Mon, 23 Sep 2019 17:00:52 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=5.2.4 Technological Change Can Drive Job & Career Opportunities https://www.donegalconnect.com/technological-change-can-drive-job-career-opportunities/ https://www.donegalconnect.com/technological-change-can-drive-job-career-opportunities/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2019 16:46:48 +0000 https://www.donegalconnect.com/?p=50014 We need to understand the rapid pace of technological change in the workplace if we are to take advantage of the job and career opportunities this brings. This is the subject of an ICT/Fintech Symposium taking place as part of Donegal Connect on Friday 4th October 2-4pm in Pramerica, Letterkenny.

“So many roles have become automated and transformed by the Digital Revolution,” according to David Roche, Director of FinTech Services & Head of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) with Pramerica.

“Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cyber Security, AR, VR and the Internet of Things are constantly growing & adding value. All of these things create change, but they also offer opportunities for new jobs in technology and above all enhancing/satisfying customer expectations.”

“The great thing about these kinds of jobs and new opportunities, is that you can constantly upskill, so you don’t end up doing the same thing all the time. We’ll be talking about the changes and the opportunities involved at this symposium, which is titled Navigating Future of Work.”

David says the symposium is aimed at everyone who needs to understand that the future of work will afford us many new opportunities. “Students, careers counsellors, principals/teachers, and people who work in ICT, FinTech, Med Tech and other tech sector businesses will benefit from hearing from companies within the ICT/FinTech sector.”

“We talk about the future of work but in some ways it’s already here,” says David. “The challenge now is NAVIGATING it and understanding the framework and the new disruptive technologies that will offer these new opportunities. So, the symposium sets out to explore 5 key trends: New Behaviours, Technologies, Millenials in the Workplace, Mobility and Globalisation.”

MC and Keynote speaker at this event will be Dr. Clare Ryan, Co-Founder and Sales Director, ITUS Secure Technologies Ltd and other speakers include David Roche and Padraic Lynch, Lecturer in Department of Design & Creative Media at LYIT.

This event is being organised by the Donegal ICT/FinTech Group. The group was established in 2018 following the publication of a skills report by the North West Regional Skills Forum Manager. The skills report identified the potential of the ICT/FinTech sector in the North West but also warned against challenges in relation to recruitment in the coming years.

A working group comprised of Donegal ICT/FinTech employers, Donegal ETB, LYIT, and the Regional Skills Forum was established. The overall objective of the group is to promote working and studying in ICT/FinTech in Donegal. The group engages with the various stakeholders in post-primary education including teachers, students, parents, Principals and Guidance Counsellors. In addition, the group collaborates with new programme development, changes to existing programmes, guest lectures, study trips, training for existing employees and research.

Attendance at this event is free but booking is essential. Details and booking here:

Small Business Can Boost Donegal’s Growth https://www.donegalconnect.com/small-business-can-boost-donegals-growth/ https://www.donegalconnect.com/small-business-can-boost-donegals-growth/#respond Fri, 20 Sep 2019 16:35:59 +0000 https://www.donegalconnect.com/?p=50011 With over 10,000 small businesses in the county, they could be the biggest drivers of jobs and economic growth in Donegal, if they have the right support. That’s according to head of enterprise with Donegal Local Enterprise Office, Michael Tunney.

Michael is calling on small business owners to come together at a special Donegal Connect interactive conference on ‘Driving the County Forward’. The conference runs from from 8am to 2pm on Wednesday 2nd October at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Letterkenny.

“Over 92% of businesses in Donegal have 10 or less employees and they have huge potential to grow and boost their profits, income and jobs. They’d benefit from this growth, and so would the entire county. But to achieve this, these businesses need to be ambitious and they must get the kind of support they need from the public sector agencies.”

“Donegal Connect is about creating opportunities for the county. Now’s the time for business to tap into those opportunities. To make this happen, the public and private sector need to work hand in glove to create a shared vision for the county’s future.  This conference gives us an opportunity to work on this vision as a team.”

“Over 10,000 businesses in Donegal employ over 44,000 people– according to the last available figures in 2017. If we could achieve a 20% increase in the next three years, we would have almost 53,000 employed in the private sector in our county. That’s worth working towards.”

Director of Economic Development with Donegal County Council, Garry Martin, will present a vision for the county at the event. The conference will also hear from a range of local businesses who have succeeded by creating and fulfilling ambitious plans. These include Seaquest Systems, Lottie Dolls, Irish Pressings, and Irish Premium Oysters. “And we will also hear from serial entrepreneur Cathal McGloin who has succeeded in establishing a number of UCT businesses in the US,” adds Michael.

“The conference, as well as channelling our public sector and our businesses, will also give a chance for everyone to give their own feedback on moving forward together.”

Attendance is free but booking is essential. For information and booking click here.

Donegal Connect Launches Short Video Competition https://www.donegalconnect.com/donegal-connect-launches-30-second-video-competition/ https://www.donegalconnect.com/donegal-connect-launches-30-second-video-competition/#comments Wed, 28 Aug 2019 09:45:13 +0000 https://www.donegalconnect.com/?p=49781 Donegal Connect has launched a short video competition which aims to follow up on the huge success of #LoveDonegal day earlier this month. “We’re inviting people to enter videos of 30 seconds or less about ‘their’ Donegal,” says Donegal Connect spokesperson Joanne Kilmartin.

The prize is a three course dinner in Cedars Restaurant and overnight stay for two people with full Irish breakfast at the fabulous 5 star Lough Eske Castle Hotel in Donegal!

Video Competition Guidelines

“We are looking for people who can let their passion for their county leap right off the screen,” says Joanne Kilmartin, the Donegal Diaspora officer with Donegal County Council – a lead partner in the Donegal Connect project. “#LoveDonegal day got an incredible response from what was mainly pictures and short messages alone. You can tell an even better story with video, and that is what this competition is about.”

“So, in 2 minutes or less, tell us about the unique things, places or people you love most about Donegal. Tell the world what’s so amazing about living here, working here, or running your own business here. Tell them why it’s such an incredible place to visit or why they should invest in Donegal. But most of all, we want to hear YOUR story, told your own unique way.”

“We’re absolutely delighted to sponsor this video competition,” says Donal Cox, General Manager of Lough Eske Castle. “We can’t wait to hear short stories from our friends, guests and locals as to why Donegal has a special place in their heart.”

Selecting the Video Competition Winner

Selection of the winner will be carried out by a panel of judges, which includes Ciara Sugrue, Head of Festivals with Fáilte Ireland. “This video competition is an ideal way to share your own special vision of Donegal to a global online audience,” says Ciara.  “It’s also a great way to promote Donegal and inspire people to come and see it for themselves.”

The other judges are: Michael Tunney, Head of Enterprise with Donegal LEO, Anne Marie Conlon, Communications Manager with Donegal County Council, video producer Paul McGuckin of Landscape Ireland, hotel and tourism expert Deirdre McGlone, and PR expert Trish Hegarty of Inis Communications.   The winner will be announced on Monday 16th September.

The competition opens today (Wednesday 28th August) and closes at 5pm on Monday 9th September. To enter, you must be aged 18 or over. Check out all the details and conditions here: https://www.donegalconnect.com/donegal-connect-video-competition/

Donegal Connect is staging over 50 business, arts, food, heritage, music, sport, Irish language, family  and outdoor events from 27th September to 6th October 2019. The public/private sector project is funded by Fáilte Ireland under the Global Irish Initiative. #LoveDonegal Campaign Reaches Over 33 million https://www.donegalconnect.com/lovedonegal-campaign-reaches-over-33-million/ https://www.donegalconnect.com/lovedonegal-campaign-reaches-over-33-million/#respond Fri, 23 Aug 2019 10:40:04 +0000 https://www.donegalconnect.com/?p=1103 The #LoveDonegal day campaign reached worldwide audiences of over 33 million people, trended at Number 1 in Ireland, and trended in the UK and the US.

“We have all been totally overwhelmed not just by the statistics but by the sheer strength of the human response to #LoveDonegal day” says Garry Martin, director of service with Donegal County Council.  The council are a lead partner in Donegal Connect, the public/private sector project behind #LoveDonegal Day. Donegal Connect are holding over 50 events from 27th September to 6th October this year.

“We want to say a huge thank you to all the people in Donegal and all over the world who took part, and particularly to all those individuals and organisations who worked hard to spread the word to others.”

“The first indication of success was when we began to trend the night before. On the 14th August, we trended at the Number 1 spot in Ireland from 7am straight through to 7pm,” says Garry. “We trended at Number 1 in Belfast, at No 29 in the UK, and also trended briefly in the US.”

“People really engaged with the campaign too. The total number of Tweets & Retweets, Facebook and Instagram posts, and other interactions was over 290,000,” adds Garry. “People posted pictures of their favourite landscapes, days out, things to do, their communities, why they loved to visit, work or live in Donegal.”

“These are all the things we wanted to promote about our amazing county for Donegal Connect, so we are absolutely delighted not just with the statistics but with the outpouring of genuine love and affection for Donegal. It was an incredible day, and people are still posting #LoveDonegal.”

Remote Working ‘Hotdesks’ for Donegal Connect

“We’ve had lots of enquiries since #LoveDonegal day from people interested in moving home or relocating here,” says Joanne Kilmartin, the Donegal Diaspora officer for the county.

“So many entrepreneurs in Donegal emphasise just what a great place it is to do business, and we’d like to give people a taste of that. So, as part of Donegal Connect 2019, we’re offering hotdesk facilities to anyone who wants to travel here to attend our events but may need to work while they are here.”

“For Donegal Connect, a range of community and public sector groups are offering high speed broadband in a fully equipped workspace at 8 locations across the county from Inishowen to Arranmore Island,” says Joanne. “So business owners or employees get a chance to work outside their traditional office environment during Donegal Connect. It also gives those with limited leave in the final quarter of the year to come to Donegal to join us for some of the programme.”

“The hotdesks initiative is about promoting the county as a place where anyone can leverage technology in order to work remotely in one of the most beautiful counties in Ireland.” To enquire about booking a hotdesk please email Joanne at info@donegaldiaspora.ie.

The programme covers  over 45 events taking place over 10 days of events, from September 27th – October 6th across the county.

The launch unveiled details of an 8-week promotional campaign aimed at capturing lots of attention for the events worldwide. “We will be staging a #lovedonegal Twitter day on 14th August, asking everyone with Donegal connections to tell us what they love about our county,” said Michael Tunney of Donegal LEO – a leading partner in the project.

“We’ll be calling on our high-profile Donegal Connect ambassadors like Sarah Jessica Parker, Packie Bonner and others to support the Twitter day, so we are confident this will help us reach even more people.”

“We will also be launching a short video competition on social media, which is for everyone – you don’t have to be a professional to enter. We want to harness the talent and creativity of ordinary people in how they portray Donegal in 20 seconds or less. And we want and to share their vision of Donegal and their pride in our county, to create an online global buzz.”

“But none of this would be possible with the funding and support we have received from Fáilte Ireland under the Global Irish Initiative,” said Michael. “The Donegal Connect project is extremely grateful that we now have this chance to extend our reach across the world.”

Packie will be joined by Lorraine McIntosh of Deacon Blue and Owen Coyle, ex-Bolton FC Manager, at the Metropolitan Bar, Merchant Square on Wednesday 19th June from 6-8pm, along with representatives from Donegal.

‘Donegal Connect’ aims to boost tourism and business opportunities in Ireland’s northernmost county.  “So it will showcase our county over 10 days of events from 27th September – 6th October 2019.  The public and private sector in this wild and wonderful county have come together for ‘Donegal Connect. The project will highlight Donegal’s strengths in tourism, business, arts & culture, food & drink and our rich heritage and Irish language.”

Packie says Scotland – and Glasgow especially – holds a special place for Donegal people. “The connection is huge. So many waves of emigrants over the years have come to Scotland from Donegal. A lot of people from Donegal came here to work in the steel industry, in fishing and in farming. They had tough times, but it gave them and their families a livelihood and created very strong social and cultural links. Through Donegal Connect we hope to re-establish or consolidate these links and connections.”

“Today, there is so much for Donegal to shout about,” says Lorraine McIntosh of Deacon Blue. “Donegal’s been voted the Coolest Place on the Planet by National Geographic, and Most Scenic Airport in the world – 2 years in a row”

“We’ve hosted Star Wars and the Irish Open golf tournament,” says Packie. “We have 11 fabulous blue-flag beaches – more than any other county. We have the longest coastline in Ireland and the highest accessible seacliffs in Europe.”

About Donegal Connect

Packie says there is something for everyone in the programme.  “We’ll have world renowned Donegal artists, like Altan, playing at iconic venues across the county. The arts and culture programme includes Donegal plays, exhibitions and concerts.”

“They’ll get you out and about with walks, runs, island visits and a 7 a-side competition,” says Owenie Coyle. “You can get a true ‘taste’ of Donegal with the unique food experiences being specially organised as part of the programme and to explore your Donegal heritage, there will be workshops on genealogy.”

Packie says Donegal Connect will also have a range of business, investment and skills symposia with key speakers. “For those thinking of moving back home or relocating here, they will also address the practical “ins and outs” of returning to Donegal.”
