Traditional Boats of Ireland – The Dónal Mac Polin Collection

On display in Donegal County Museum, in association with the County Archives, is a collection of watercolours and illustrations by Dónal Mac Polin. The collection documents and highlights the splendour of the disappearing boat-building tradition around the Irish coast. Based on extensive maritime history research this exhibition celebrates a variety of boats. These include currachs, drontheims, yawls, cots, hookers, punts, flats and skiffs.
The collection captures the craftsmanship, skills and intricacies of Ireland’s traditional boats and boat-building traditions. Dónal Mac Polin is author of ‘The Donegal Currachs’ book (2007).He also contributed to, and was assistant editor of, the ‘Traditional Boats of Ireland: History, Folklore & Construction’ book (2008).
