Connecting with our Diaspora: Donegal Associations and Networks

October 4, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Donegal Connect

Social and Online Media have radically altered the way our emigrants connect both with their home and with each other. This is challenging for traditional support networks, like the Donegal Associations, who were often the main point of contact for young people leaving Donegal for the US or UK. Today, young people link up with each other online or through the growing reach of organisations like the GAA abroad.

This informal workshop will operate as a facilitated discussion and ‘thinktank’ to examine:

  • What role should traditional networks like the Donegal Associations have?
  • Does this role need to adapt to the digital age?
  • What other networks are Donegal emigrants or Diaspora using?
  • Are young people in particular getting the support they need when they leave?
  • What should support networks of the future look like and how can we shape them together?

Please note that the workshop will also include an overview of the current work of the Donegal Diaspora project.

Who should attend?

  • Donegal Associations, including US, UK and Dublin-based groups
  • The Donegal GAA and other local sports bodies with a global reach
  • Emigrants groups or organisations
  • Diaspora representatives including elected representatives
